Metgen, a creator of novel enzymes for pulp and paper, biofuel and waste water treatment industries, has been honoured as the Cleantech company winner of Eurecan European Venture Contest 2010.
The winner was chosen from 987 applications from 24 countries throughout 2010.
MetGen enzymes are used for pulp industry processes. New enzymes make existing lignocellulose treatment processes faster, cleaner and more efficient. Enzymes are also used for wastewater treatment in pulp and paper industry as well as for second generation bioethanol production from cellulosic biomass.
In the contest, 449 ICT, Cleantech and Healthcare companies were reviewed by over 120 European Experts online and face-to-face at meetings all over Europe.
- We are honoured to be awarded with the top price in Cleantech sector of innovative entrepreneurship in Europe.
This boosts our efforts to start co-operation with industrial companies having strategic Cleantech agenda.
Enzymes are proteins that catalyze chemical reactions.
Laccase enzymes are used in pulp and paper industry, because they can de-lignify wood by an oxidation chain reaction leading to lignin oxidation respecting the integrity of cellulose.
MetGen's laccase disrupt the lignin network and thereby facilitate the interaction between enzymes and polysaccharides. Laccase treatment improves bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass into biofuels.
Laccase are also used in waste water treatment, because waste water from pulp&paper and biofuel factories are maintaining high COD and phenol levels.
